Dosage
Adults: Drink the equivalent of 2 grams once daily or as directed by your health-care practitioner. To make a decoction, use 1 rounded teaspoon (2 g) of dried root per cup of water and simmer on low heat in a covered pot for at least 15–20 minutes (up to 60 minutes for a concentrate). Strain and serve. Astragalus is naturally sweet. You may make a larger portion and keep in the fridge for 2–3 days. Heat up or drink cold.

ASTRAGALUS
The root of the Astragalus plant has been extensively studied in Asia. It is most well known for its effect on the immune system. It increases the activity of immune cells, resulting in more efficient responses to infection and reversing states of immune suppression.
In contrast to the immune boosting properties of some herbs, Astragalus can be taken for long periods of time (several months) without showing a decrease in the response of the immune system. Astragalus also has antiviral properties. It has a positive effect on the cardiovascular system by protecting the heart from viral infections that damage heart tissue. Astragalus also improves shortness of breath and cardiac output in patients with congestive heart failure.
The Immune System
The immune system is capable of fighting off intruders and remembering them so that they are killed off quickly if they invade again. The immune system must be able to differentiate self from non-self in order to know what to attack. If it does not recognize the body's own tissue than autoimmune diseases occurs.
Physical and emotional stress has been shown in studies to depress the amount of circulating immune cells. Examples of possible stressors are excessive exercise, surgery, a long illness, and loss of a job or death of a loved one. The sympathetic nervous system is activated by stress and causes increased heart rate and blood pressure, and a heightening of the body's senses. It decreases the functioning of systems that are not essential for fighting or fleeing a situation. This includes immunity.
