As a common stimulant laxative for constipation, Cascara Sagrada contains anthroquinones, which are responsible for Cascara’s powerful laxative effects. New Roots Cascara Sagrada 325mg is a hybrid formula featuring aged bark blended with a potency-validated 4:1 extract. Relief for constipation ranks as its most common therapeutic application. Anthraquinone, an organic compound present in the bark of Cascara sagrada, is credited with laxative effects which may include increased fluid within the colon and stimulation of colon contractions essential for gastrointestinal transit. Cascara Sagrada from New Roots comes in easy to consume vegetarian capsules. [VCAPS]

CASCARA SAGRADA BENEFITS
Cascara sagrada (Rhamnus purshiana) is a small tree native to North American locations, including California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Southeast British Columbia. Its name translates to "sacred bark" in Spanish – a fitting nickname that reflects the profound respect and importance associated with the cascara sagrada plant by those who have discovered its medicinal benefits and properties.
The primary feature that has made cascara sagrada a legendary herbal remedy is its bark, which boasts potent medicinal qualities. Indeed, for generations, indigenous communities have carefully harvested the bark of the cascara sagrada tree and used it in a wide range of therapeutic applications.
One of the most well-known medicinal applications of cascara sagrada is its role as a natural laxative. Indigenous people, particularly those along the Pacific coast, discovered that when correctly prepared, the bark could effectively relieve constipation and digestive discomfort. This discovery marked the beginning of Cascara Sagrada's journey into the realm of herbal medicine. Today, cascara sagrada remains prized for its marked laxative effects thanks to its rich anthraquinone content. These bioactive compounds stimulate the intestines' muscles, helping promote bowel movements. So effective is cascara sagrada that it is frequently added to over-the-counter herbal and dietary supplements. It can, of course, also be purchased as a standalone herbal preparation.
Medicinal Applications Of Cascara Sagrada
Constipation Relief
– Cascara sagrada is used first and foremost to relieve occasional constipation by causing muscle contractions in the intestines. In turn, these muscle contractions help move stool through the bowels.
Beyond its well-documented use as a laxative, cascara sagrada offers many other interesting therapeutic applications, including:
Colon Cleansing:
Cascara sagrada can effectively complement a
Colon Cleansing
or detoxification regimen, multiplying the health benefits.
Digestive Health:
Cascara sagrada can support overall
Digestive Health
by promoting regular bowel movements and preventing constipation-related discomfort.
Liver Health:
Though the mode of action is unclear, research has shown that cascara sagrada can effectively treat gallstones and liver disease. In fact, some studies have demonstrated that cascara is able to heal a damaged liver.
Weight Loss:
Some weight loss supplements and detox programs include cascara sagrada as an ingredient to help eliminate waste and promote weight loss.
Cascara Sagrada Supplements
You can easily find Cascara sagrada in herbal shops, health food stores, and online. One of the most common forms is dried herb, where the bark is harvested, dried, and then either brewed as a tea or used to make DIY herbal blends. Cascara sagrada is also widely available in supplement form, including capsules, tablets, and liquid extracts. Supplements are typically standardized to contain specific amounts of the active compounds in cascara, making dosing more precise and convenient for those who prefer a consistent intake and, likely, more consistent therapeutic outcomes.
Key Considerations For Herbal Supplements
Cascara sagrada is generally considered safe for adults in the short term (less than a week). Long-term use (more than 2 weeks) is considered unsafe and can cause serious side effects like dehydration, muscle weakness, heart problems and low electrolytes. Common side effects of short-term cascara sagrada use include stomach discomfort and cramping.
Individuals with gastrointestinal disorders should avoid using cascara sagrada altogether.
Moreover, caution must be exercised when taking cascara sagrada with certain medications, as interactions can occur. These medications include stimulant laxatives, blood thinners, diuretics, corticosteroids, and digoxin.
