EMU OIL
Emu oil is an oil made from the native Australian non-flying bird, the Emu. The oil is rendered from the thick layer of subcutaneous fat on the back of the bird...
It has been used for centuries by Australian Aborigines for the treatment of a wide array of disorders, including burns, wounds, bruises, as well as joint pain.
Emu oil is high in Oleic acid, an
omega 9
fatty acid. It also contain smaller amounts of
omega 6
and
omega 3
fatty acids.
Other known nutrients include: Vitamin K2 in MK-4 form, Vitamins D, and E, Antioxidant
carotenoids
and flavones.
When used for internal purposes, it has been shown to decrease cholesterol levels. It has also been used to promote healthy weight loss, as well as historically used as a cough suppressant and treatment during cold and flu.
Today, almost all studies focus on the anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties of emu oil. It appears to have great potential as a treatment for arthritis conditions as well as after injury or surgery to speed healing. There is some evidence to suggest that it works better for acute inflammation, rather than as a remedy for long standing or chronic problems. It is gaining popularity in the beauty industry, as an all-natural body and hair moisturizer, as well as frequently used in cosmetic properties. Studies have found that using emu oil can help with dry skin as well as increasing thickness by 2-3 times and age spots and wrinkles diminished noticeably. Emu oil can be useful as a natural treatment to reduce the appearance of stretch marks and scars while relieving the pain and inflammation associated with cuts, scrapes and burns. As a therapeutic balm emu oil moisturizes the skin and reduces the itching, redness, cracking, peeling and scaling associated with
psoriasis
and eczema.
Emu oil is recommended both internally and externally, as a topical application. If using topically, use 2-3x/day over the affected areas. Currently there are no established dosage recommendations for internal use. Emu oil is not advised during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
