Detailed Ingredient Descriptions:
Maca Root
has traditionally been used, not only as a food staple, but also as an energizer, stress reliever, aphrodisiac and fertility enhancer (both male and female). It is consumed widely to help alleviate the symptoms of menopause including hot flashes, tender breasts and vaginal dryness and it is even believed by some to help prevent osteoporososis. Maca contains a broad composition of plant sterols, including beta-sitosterol. These compounds, in conjunction with benzyl and p-methoxybenzyl glucosinolates, are believed to produce the sexual enhancement for which maca is best known. An animal study found that after 28 weeks, results indicated that maca was effective in the prevention of estrogen deficient bone loss. This is an important finding as estrogen deficiency after menopause is considered to be one of the major determinants of bone loss and al- though more research needs to be done, maca may offer some promise in the prevention of osteoporosis.
Milk Thistle
Extract
is remarkably useful in the treatment of liver diseases such as cirrhosis,
hepatitis
and liver poisoning. It also regulates the digestion of fats, reduces inflammation of the intestines and promotes the excretion of certain hormones. Milk thistle helps promote the flow of bile from the liver and gallbladder and may also have value in the treatment of chronic uterine problems. As well, milk thistle, in combination with maca, has shown a positive effect on lipid and glucose metabolism in rats with elevated cho- lesterol, triglyceride and blood sugar levels.
Gamma Oryzanol
is an important antioxidant most commonly derived from
rice bran
oil. Gamma oryzanol has been used in the past to treat menopausal symptoms, in particular, hot flashes. Several studies have been done on gamma oryzanol's effectiveness at low- ering cholesterol. this is an important benefit for women once they reach menopause. Sugano (1997) noted that rice bran oil has been found to be as effective as other vege- table oils in lowering plasma cholesterol levels. cicero and derosa (2005), in a computer search spanning the years 1966 to 2004, found a number of promising studies confirming the ability of the oil to reduce total cholesterol and ldl by about 40% while at the same time increasing Hdl cholesterol.
Rhodiola
Extract
is recognized for its ability to help reduce fatigue and improve sleep, mental performance and energy. during perimenopause and menopause, mood swings, the 'blues', depression or an inability to cope with stress can be common emotional symptoms. the hormonal fluctuations and physical changes that take place during menopause can be very tiring and contribute to mood changes. rhodiola is an adap- togen herb and is ideally suited to address the physical and emotional stresses women face during menopause.
Ginkgo
Biloba
has a long tradition of use in chinese Medicine for improving mental performance. More recently, ginkgo has also been shown to increase mood and sexual response levels. during the perimenopausal, menopausal or postmenopausal stages, women often complain of forgetfulness, decreased libido and an inability to concentrate. these symptoms may not solely be the result of hormonal changes but may also reflect hardening of the arteries and a decrease in nutrient and oxygen supply to the brain or peripheral blood vessels. Symptoms of cerebral insufficiency include difficulties with concentration and memory, absentmindedness, confusion, lack of energy, tiredness, decreased physical performance, depressed mood and anxiety. Many experimental and clinical studies support the use of ginkgo in treating blood flow disorders. in recent years, ginkgo has also been studied for female sexual dysfunction. it seems to relax vascular muscles and increase blood flow to peripheral capillary beds. rowland and tai (2003) found in preliminary research that ginkgo may contribute to the sexual response by improving clitoral and vaginal congestion.
Sage
has been a popular plant remedy for several millennia used for a variety of ailments such as urinary tract infections (common during menopause), dyspepsia, mouth ulcers, perspiration (in particular night sweats) and inflammation. Sage has a long-standing reputation for having a beneficial effect on memory. Several double-blind, placebo- controlled studies have demonstrated sage's positive impact on mood and cognition.
Black cohosh
is now commonly used by women during menopause to relieve hot flashes. recent European studies have shown extracts of black cohosh to be a safe and effective alternative to estrogen therapy for the treatment of menopausal symptoms, particularly for women with an intolerance or contraindication to traditional synthetic hormone replacement therapy. Black cohosh has been used to alleviate both perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes, depression, mood changes and sleep disturbances. the effects of black cohosh can likely be attributed to its estrogen -like effects as it contains a significant amount of natural
isoflavones. the German com-mission E has stated in its monograph that black cohosh suppresses luteinising hormone (lH) and binds weakly, for a short duration, to estrogen receptors. it has also been studied for use in treating peripheral arterial disease. Historical notes have also reported black co- hosh as being helpful for headaches, irregular bleeding and increasing vaginal lubrication.
Chasteberry extract
is an herb that balances hormones via the pituitary gland, where many female hormones are produced. it regulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis to correct the balance of progesterone to estrogen. A decline in progesterone is usually the first physiological change in perimenopause to cause noticeable symptoms (premenstrual headaches,
PMS, irregular or heavy periods, anxiety and nervousness). Pro- gesterone is formed in the corpus luteum (a temporary gland in the ovary) after ovula- tion. However, ovulation becomes less frequent during perimenopause and contributes to a subsequent decline in progesterone. chasteberry acts directly on the hypothalamus and pituitary glands in the brain to increase luteinising hormone (lH) production and at the same time reduce the release of follicle stimulating hormone (fSH). the result is a shift in the ratio of estrogen to progesterone, in favour of progesterone.
