Detailed Ingredient Descriptions:
Maca Root
has traditionally been used in Peru for its aphrodisiac properties, to relieve stress and enhance fertility in males and females. there now exists additional evidence to suggest that it does improve male sexual function. fortunately, maca improves sex- ual ability or performance without changing hormone levels, thereby reducing the risk of stimulating prostate abnormal cells, often associated with testosterone therapy. in addition, maca has also been found to have an anti-hyperplastic (anti-growth) effect in prostate glands of animals.
Saw Palmetto
has long been used in Europe to treat an enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). the active parts of the plant are the sterols and free fatty acids found in the berry. these sterols and free fatty acids appear to provide an important anti-inflammatory action in BPH. As well, they may be able to block the conversion of healthy testosterone into an unhealthy testosterone called dihydrotestosterone (dHt). Numerous clinical studies have shown saw palmetto extract to significantly diminish the signs and symptoms of BPH. roughly ninety percent (90%) of men who have mild to moderate BPH experience some improvement in symptoms during the first four to six weeks of therapy with saw palmetto. the most significant improvement was in night time urinary frequency.
Stinging
Nettle
is a root that has been used traditionally by herbalists to assist with urinary complaints in men. Studies suggest that the root of the stinging nettle, in combination with other herbs such as saw palmetto, may be an effective treatment for BPH. BPH urinary symptoms are due to the enlarged prostate gland pressing on the urethra (the tube that empties urine from the bladder). laboratory studies have shown stinging nettle to be comparable to finasteride, a medication commonly recommended for BPH, in slowing the growth of certain prostate cells. Stinging nettle may also inhibit the conversion of androgens into estrogens which have been associated with the development of BPH.
Rye Pollen Extract
(or cernilton) has been used in Europe to treat problems of the prostate ranging from prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate) to BPH (enlargement of the prostate) for several centuries. it relaxes the smooth muscles of the urethra and increases bladder tone. it is reported that oral intake of rye grass extracts improves uri- nary symptoms in individuals with mild to moderate BPH (frequency, nocturia, urgency, dribbling, painful urination and decreased flow rate). As well, cernilton extract has been found to inhibit the growth of prostate cells. rye pollen's protective effects on the pros- tate may also work by inhibiting certain inflammatory chemicals, prostaglandins and leukotrienes, in the body. in a review of the evidence for the clinical effects and safety of the rye grass pollen extract cernilton in men with symptomatic benign prostatic hy- perplasia (BPH), it was concluded that rye pollen extract is well tolerated and improves overall urological symptoms, including nocturia.
American
ginseng
is an adaptogenic herb that strengthens and normalizes body func- tions and helps the body deal with various forms of stress.
ginseng
is also widely believed to be capable of enhancing sexual performance. in a review of the aphrodisiac and adaptogenic properties of ginseng, the authors reported that ginseng is considered a tonic that enhances physical performance (including sexual performance), promotes vitality and increases resistance to stress and aging.
Selenium
Yeast
is an essential mineral found in trace amounts in the human body. it works as an antioxidant. Epidemiological studies show a consistent trend for populations residing in geographic areas that have low selenium levels in the soil to have a higher mortality from abnormal cells. other studies have shown a lower risk for abnormal cells in individuals with higher
serum
selenium levels. Studies have also suggested protective effects of selenium against prostate abnormal cells. Brooks et al (2001), in a research study looking at selenium intake and prostate abnormal cells risk, concluded that a low blood level of selenium is associated with a 4 to 5 fold increase in prostate abnormal cells risk. Sabichi et al (2006) were the first to show that selenium taken as an oral supplement accumulates preferentially
in the human prostate gland. their findings support the hypothesis that supplementation with selenium may contribute to the abnormal cells preventative effects of selenium.
Pygeum africanum
's active constituents include phytosterols that have both anti- inflammatory and decongesting effects on the prostate. there is a broad body of re- search evidence to suggest that the oral use of pygeum africanum improves urologic symptoms for men suffering with BPH. it also indirectly controls testosterone activity in the prostate, which may reduce the risk of BPH. With respect to prostate abnormal cells, there is also some initial research to suggest that pygeum extracts have 'anti-proliferative' effects on prostate cells.
Beta-sitosterols
are phytosterols or plant alcohols that are literally in every vegetable we eat. over the past few years, concentrated extracts of this particular phytosterol have been shown to be beneficial for lowering cholesterol and alleviating symptoms associated with BPH, such as frequent and painful urination. in a review of clinical trials involving 519 men with mild to moderate (symptomatic) BPH, analysts reported that beta-sitosterols provided notable relief from urinary problems (Wilt et al 1999). Beta- sitosterols also increase urine flow and cause few side effects. More interestingly, ben- efits matched those commonly seen with recommendation BPH drugs. Beta-sitosterols even hold promise for lowering a man's cholesterol levels at the same time that it controls BPH symptoms. Beta-sitosterols appear to inhibit the action of the enzyme 5-alpha- reductase, which converts testosterone into dHt. dHt is one of the main contributing factors to BPH.
Zinc
's
highest concentration is found in prostate cells which may protect the gland from early damage that could lead to abnormal cells. Many studies have linked zinc deficiency with prostate enlargement. infection and other stress may result in lower blood serum zinc levels in general and in particular lower prostate levels. in prostatitis, infection of the prostate, zinc levels are found to be considerably lower than those in a normal prostate.
Lycopene
is a member of the carotenoid family of chemical substances. it is a red, fat-soluble pigment found in certain plants and micro organisms. lycopene is found in high levels in tomatoes. it is present in human tissues including the liver, adrenal glands, lungs, prostate, colon and skin. lycopene has been found to possess antioxidant and anti-abnormal cellsous properties. A number of epidemiological studies have correlated a high intake of foods containing lycopene (or high blood levels of lycopene) to a reduced incidence of abnormal cells, cardiovascular disease and macular degeneration. A study pub- lished by members of the department of Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health stated, "the strongest known dietary risk factor for prostate abnormal cells is a lycopene deficit".
Vitamin D3
is a fat-soluble vitamin. abnormal cells risk and
vitamin d
levels have become popular news items lately. in particular, a number of research studies suggest that low levels of
vitamin d
seem to increase the risk of prostate abnormal cells. in late 2004, researchers at the university of toronto reported the results of a trial of 15 men with advanced prostate abnormal cells. the patients all received 2000 iu's per day of cholecalciferol (Vitamin d3) for up to 21 months. fourteen of the 15 men showed evidence of a clinical response and none had any side effects. While the trial was small, these are the most positive results for a vitamin d compound to date in a human abnormal cells study
Combination Rationale
Prostate enlargement or BPH is primarily the result of hormonal changes associated with aging. Androgens (male hormones) are thought to play a role in prostate enlargement. the most important androgen is testosterone, which is produced throughout a man's lifetime. it is well known that testosterone decreases with age, but less well known is the fact that other hormones like
estrogen, luteinising hormone and prolactin actually increase with age. this increase in additional circulating hormones leads to reduced clearing of the testosterone hormone and an unhealthy increase in testosterone con- centrations in the prostate gland. under these circumstances, testosterone is converted to a more powerful male hormone, dihydrotestosterone (dHt) which can stimulate growth of prostate cells and lead to prostate enlargement. Some scientists believe that elevated estrogen levels may actually inhibit the proper elimination of dHt from the prostate gland.
Prostate-Pro + Maca Support safely inhibits the production of dihydrotestosterone (dHt), reducing prostate inflammation, normalizing urination and enhancing circulation, which is especially important when the prostate is swollen or congested.
Prostate-Pro + Maca Support contains natural ingredients such as saw palmetto, rye pollen extract, stinging nettle and pygeum africanum. these are herbs with natural anti- inflammatory action and natural inhibitors of dHt. Maca and american ginseng help support reduced libido and erectile dysfunction and increase resistance to stress. in addition, specific nutrients are included to help protect the prostate cells from oxidative damage and to reduce abnormal cells risk.
